Integrate with Bonusly

Gusto integrates with Bonusly to reduce administrative overhead by syncing your employee records from Gusto to Bonusly. 

  • Keep in mind: Bonusly customers must be on the Pro plan in order to access Gusto and other HRIS/single-sign-on integrations. 

Customers who join Gusto from Bonusly will receive Gusto payroll free for the first 3 months. 

Connect to Gusto from Bonusly

You must be an admin in both Gusto and Bonusly (global or tech admin) accounts, and you must be signed in to both accounts before proceeding.

  1. In Bonusly, click Integrations from the left-menu.
  2. Scroll to the “Get in sync” headline, locate Gusto, and click the tile.
  3. If you don’t have a Gusto account yet, click Click here to start one.
    • You’ll be asked to enter some basic information, then click Create Gusto Account. From the Gusto integration page, click the claim your Gusto account link to create your account. Check your email for next steps to complete Gusto onboarding.
  4. If you already have an account, or once yours is set up, click Authorize.
  5. Enter your Gusto sign-in credentials and click Sign In.
  6. Click Authorize again.
    • Once connected, review the default integration settings–make sure Auto Activate is set to "No" (for now), otherwise you’ll immediately activate all Gusto employees in Bonusly. Instead, perform the rest of the initial set up manually, and then automate the process.
  7. If there isn’t a timestamp for the last synced date, click Refresh from Gusto now to make sure the employee information was pulled from Gusto.

Manually sync employee information to get started

Manually sync information from Gusto to Bonusly if you want to confirm employee information before launching Bonusly to them. 

  1. Click Users from the left-menu.
  2. Click Imported Users.
    • Consider this a “holding” page where you can review information before employee information is passed into Bonusly officially. 
      • Users in this section are not yet activated in Bonusly.
  3. Click Configure Activation Rules.
    • Check the boxes for the employee conditions that you want to sync to Bonusly. 
  4. When you’re ready to send Bonusly invitation emails, select the employee(s) you’d like to Activate and click Activate Selected.
    • Once officially activated, employees will then appear in the “Manage” section. 

Automatically sync information from Gusto to Bonusly

Enabling “Auto Activate” means that anytime a new employee is added to Gusto, they'll automatically be added to Bonusly–by default this is off. Most customers enable "Auto Activate" once they're ready to roll out Bonusly to the whole company.

  1. Head to your Gusto integration page in Bonusly.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Click the checkbox next to Automatically Activate?.
  4. Click Save.

Once a night, all new employees in Gusto that match your Activation Rules (see step 3 of the manual sync flow) will be automatically added to Bonusly. Any changes to applicable employee information will also be synced to Bonusly.

If you dismiss an employee in Gusto, they’ll be deactivated in the Bonusly after their dismissal date has passed.

Troubleshoot syncing issues

  • Employees are missing from the “Imported Users” page. 
    • Go to the Gusto integration settings page and click Refresh from Gusto now. Wait a few minutes and your imports should show up in the “Imported Users” page. 
  • You’re receiving a “Could not fetch company information” error when trying to connect.
    • This means you’re not a Gusto admin or a Bonusly admin with Global or Tech permissions. Try again, or ask a colleague with the necessary permissions.
