This article is for admins who want to connect their Gusto account with Checkeeper to print or mail payroll checks.
Checkeeper is an online check registry that lets you print or mail payroll checks. You can print checks on virtually any check stock and in any format. You can also have Checkeeper mail checks for you with a single click.
When you connect the two accounts, we pull your approved payroll checks directly into your Checkeeper registry for easy printing or mailing.
Note: Customers who join Gusto from Checkeeper will receive Gusto payroll free for their first 3 months.
To use Checkeeper with Gusto, you first need to connect the two accounts. You can do this from your Checkeeper account.
To connect your Checkeeper account to Gusto:
At the top of the page, click Addons.
In the Gusto tile, click Add Gusto. If you are not a Gusto customer yet, click Create Gusto Account.
Checkeeper will redirect you to the Gusto website. Sign in with your Gusto credentials.
Select the companies you’d like to connect.
Click Authorize.
Checkeeper will bring you back to its website.
Click Connect this Company to finish setup.
After you connect, the Gusto listing under Addons gives you the option to remove the connection. Click Delete Gusto to disconnect.
After you run payroll in Gusto, you can import your payroll checks into Checkeeper to print or mail them.
To import your payroll checks from Gusto into Checkeeper:
Click the Registry tab.
In the top right, click Import Gusto Payrolls.
This shows all new payrolls by pay period, plus past payrolls with unprinted checks. Only the past 30 days of pay periods show.
Click Import Checks next to the payroll you’d like to import.
Your checks now appear in Registry.
Click a check to review earnings, deductions, and more.
Click Print Check to print. Imported Gusto payroll checks include full paystub information.
Checkeeper uses a Gusto-branded template by default and automatically assigns it to your payroll checks. You can use one template for paying vendors and bills and a different one for paying employees.
Click Mail Check Now to have Checkeeper mail your checks for you.
Templates control where check elements appear on the page and tell your printer where to place each piece of information. If you need help setting up a custom template (instead of the Gusto Payroll template), contact Checkeeper support at [email protected].
To add paystub details to an existing template that is not the Gusto Payroll default, drag and drop the Paystub element onto your template. Place it where you want it to print. Paystubs can be long, so make sure to leave enough room.
If you run into issues with the Gusto and Checkeeper integration, find your issue below.
“Gusto connect lost,” or “invalid grant error 0”
Disconnect from Gusto under Addons, then reconnect. This does not delete any information from Checkeeper or Gusto, so you can do this at any time.
Payroll checks were saved to the wrong template
Go to Addons and select a default template.
You can edit imported checks and change the template.
Delete the imported checks, then import them again after you select a default template.
Checks do not have a paystub
Edit your template, then drag and drop the Paystub element where you want it printed.
