Integrate with TaxTaker

TaxTaker is an end-to-end solution for startups who want to apply for and secure Federal and State Research & Development tax credits–capture the maximum funding available to you every year.  

Gusto integrates with TaxTaker to push employee and contractor wages to TaxTaker so they can easily do the analysis needed to obtain maximum credits.

Customers who join Gusto from TaxTaker will receive Gusto payroll free for their first 3 months.

Set up the Gusto and TaxTaker integration

  1. Sign in to TaxTaker.
  2. In the top-right corner, click the dropdown next to your name.
  3. Click Account settings.
  4. If you’re an existing Gusto user, click To Gusto under the “Gusto Integration” headline. New users can click Sign Up to get started with Gusto.
    • If you clicked Sign Up: you’ll be taken to Gusto where you can select whether to create a new account with the email address TaxTaker provided or with a Google account. Then, check your email for the next steps required to complete onboarding in Gusto.
  5. Enter your Gusto sign-in credentials and click Sign In.
  6. Select the company(ies) you’d like to authorize and click Authorize.
    • You’ll be redirected back to TaxTaker where you should see a success message.
  7. Select which organization you’re pulling the expenses to and click Next.
    • The selection should be the organization you’re claiming the R&D credit for. 
  8. [For companies with multiples locations]: select which address to use to file your tax returns.
  9. Select which year you're claiming the credit for and would like to import the expenses to.
  10. Click Import from Gusto
  11. Look for the confirmation message and click it to verify your data.
  12. Click Payroll & Expenses.
  13. Verify employee details such as:
    • Name
    • Title
    • State
    • W-2 Box 1 wages
      • Total yearly gross wages minus pre-tax benefits
  14. Edit the % of time spent on R&D and the R&D category (if needed).
    • Click the dotted green links to get additional information.
  15. Once all employees have been reviewed/edited, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter “Gusto” in the “Name of Payroll Provider” field. 
  16. Click Next.
  17. If you have contractors, repeat the process for contractors to verify details and modify R&D percentages and categories.
    • You can click the X to remove anyone that will not be included in the R&D claim.
  18. Click Next.
  19. If all other pieces of the claim have been completed (ie. business overview and projects), click Submit from the left-menu to finalize the claim.

Manually resync to capture updated information from Gusto. 

  1. Sign in to TaxTaker.
  2. Click the dropdown next to your name in the top-right.
  3. Click Account settings.
  4. Under the “Gusto Integration” headline, click on Refresh to trigger a new data import of employee and contractor payroll records.

The imported information can be reviewed by clicking on Payroll and Expenses from the Claim dashboard. Make sure the claim year selected is the same year you imported data for.

Troubleshoot syncing issues

The imported Box 1 wages seem incorrect

No ability to import Gusto records

Disconnect your Gusto account

  1. Sign in to TaxTaker.
  2. Click the dropdown next to your name in the top-right.
  3. Click Account settings.
  4. Under the “Gusto Integration” headline, click on Disconnect Gusto to remove authorization and disconnect the integration.
