This article is for admins who want to connect Gusto with Culture Amp.
Culture Amp is an employee experience platform with tools for engagement, performance, and development.
Use the Gusto and Culture Amp integration to keep employee data up to date across both platforms. With Gusto as your system of record, when you update employee info in Gusto, it syncs to Culture Amp automatically.
This section covers how to connect your Gusto and Culture Amp accounts. Plus and Premium customers who want to exclude specific people from the sync need to complete the Exclude specific people from the sync steps first.
Important: If any Culture Amp users do not have a Gusto employee profile, Culture Amp will deactivate their account after the first sync.
Plus and Premium customers can exclude specific people’s data from syncing to Culture Amp by setting up a custom field in Gusto. Anyone with their custom field set to “Yes” will not be imported into Culture Amp.
To set up the custom field:
Go to People.
At the top, click More.
Click Custom fields.
Click Add custom field.
Under What is the field called, name the field “Exclude from Culture Amp.”
Under Description type this: “People who have this field set to ‘Yes’ will not be imported into Culture Amp.”
Under What type of field should this be, choose Radio.
For What values should the user be able to select from, type “Yes,No.”
Under Who should fill out this field, choose Admin.
Click Add field.
To fill out the field for each person you want to exclude:
Go to People.
Click the name of the person you want to exclude.
Go to their Personal tab.
Under Custom Fields, next to Exclude from Culture Amp, click Edit.
Select Yes and click Update.
Repeat these steps for each person you want to exclude.
For people you want to include, you do not need to fill out this field. The sync includes anyone whose field is blank or marked “No.” Only people with “Yes” will be excluded.
Once you set up the custom field for each person you want to exclude, go to Step 2 to connect your Gusto and Culture Amp accounts.
To learn more about editing or deleting a custom field in Gusto, go to this article.
Follow the steps below to connect your Gusto and Culture Amp accounts. You can also follow along with Culture Amp’s integration setup video.
Note: You need to have account admin access in both Gusto and Culture Amp to set up the integration.
To connect to Gusto from Culture Amp:
Go to Settings.
Go to the Data integrations tab.
Click the Gusto tile.
Click Set up Gusto integration.
Click Connect to Gusto.
Enter your Gusto admin credentials and click Sign In.
Click Authorize to allow Culture Amp to access your company’s Gusto account.
You’ll be redirected to Culture Amp. If you have access to more than one company’s Gusto account, under Company to sync, select the company that should be associated with the Culture Amp account.
If you have admin access to more than one company and want to integrate their accounts as well, finish these steps for the first company. Then sign in to each of your Culture Amp accounts and repeat these steps.
Under Additional fields, check the box next to each field you want Gusto to send to Culture Amp.
In the Set sync settings tile, we recommend you not turn on the daily sync yet. First, complete the setup steps, then run a manual sync. This lets you review how the synced data will affect employee data already in Culture Amp.
Under Email address, enter the email of the person who should get notified if Culture Amp detects any syncing errors.
Click Save settings.
Click Sync.
Once Culture Amp validates the data and you resolve any flagged issues, click Next.
To resolve flagged issues, refer to the Troubleshoot syncing issues between Gusto and Culture Amp section of the article or contact Culture Amp support.
Click Import data.
Click Go to Users to review the newly imported users.
Your Gusto and Culture Amp accounts are now connected. The next time you run a manual sync, or overnight if you turn on a daily sync, Culture Amp will import employee data from Gusto.
If you selected more fields to sync (like employee department or job title), check the Account demographics section in Culture Amp for duplicates after the first sync. If any fields have different names in Gusto than in Culture Amp, Culture Amp adds them as new demographics. This can affect reporting if you track survey results by demographic groups.
To check your demographics:
In Culture Amp, go to Settings.
Choose the Account demographics section.
Review the list of demographics. If any fields have different names in Gusto than in Culture Amp, Culture Amp added them as new demographics after your first sync.
If Culture Amp creates a new demographic, they recommend deleting the old one. This helps prevent confusion about which field to use going forward. This will not affect any previous survey results or comparisons.
If you want to map a Gusto field to a specific demographic in Culture Amp for your next survey, contact Culture Amp Support.
You can have Culture Amp sync employee data from Gusto once a day, or you can run a manual sync whenever you need to.
Turn on automatic daily syncing
To have employee info updated once a day, turn on daily syncing in Culture Amp.
To turn on daily syncing:
Go to Settings.
Click the Data integrations tab.
Click Configure.
Click Edit.
Scroll to Step 3: Set sync settings and click the toggle next to Turn on daily sync.
Employee data syncs from Gusto to Culture Amp nightly. The Data integrations tab shows the last sync date in the Gusto tile.
Run a manual sync
Whether or not you have daily syncing turned on, you can run a manual sync in Culture Amp at any time.
To run a manual sync:
Go to Settings.
Click the Data integrations tab.
In the Gusto tile, click Sync data.
The Gusto tile shows the date and details of the last sync run once it’s complete.
If you have syncing issues, use the steps below to fix common errors.
Duplicate employees in Culture Amp
You may get this error if an employee has a different email address in Gusto and Culture Amp. Update the employee’s email address in Culture Amp to match their primary Gusto email.
Sync blocked to protect employee privacy
If Culture Amp suspects that an employee’s personal info has been mixed up with another employee’s, it blocks the automated daily sync and sends you an email. This prevents accidental access to another employee’s private information, like performance reviews.
If you confirm the updated info is in the correct Gusto employee profile, you can override the block by running a manual sync. In Culture Amp, go to Users, click Import data, and choose Sync.
Review the import summary for syncing issues
If data is not syncing correctly, you can use Culture Amp’s import summary to troubleshoot.
To review the import summary:
Go to Settings.
Click Import history.
Choose your most recent import. You can review any errors associated with the import or run a manual sync to find any problems.
If you no longer want Gusto and Culture Amp to share data, you can disconnect the integration at any time.
To disconnect Gusto from Culture Amp:
Go to Settings.
Click the Data integrations tab.
Click the Gusto tile.
Click Disconnect.
Data stops syncing immediately after you disconnect.
Contact Culture Amp directly at [email protected] or chat live from your Culture Amp account.
