This article is for admins who want to learn about automated employment and income verification through The Work Number® in Gusto.
When an employee applies for a loan, credit, or public aid, the lender may ask you to verify their job and income.
If the lender uses The Work Number—a service that integrates with Gusto—we can handle the verification for you. This saves you time and helps your team get faster approvals. Here’s how it works:
The Work Number gets a request from a lender to verify someone’s employment or income. The Work Number then checks with Gusto to find a match.
If there’s a match, we share the information the lender needs with The Work Number. You do not need to do anything.
This benefit comes with your Gusto plan at no extra cost.
Here are some key details about how The Work Number verification works with Gusto.
Automated verification is available on all Gusto plans. We can complete verifications for employees and contractors if:
Their lender made the request through The Work Number.
Your company has not opted out.
Lenders, creditors, landlords, or government agencies often ask for proof of employment or income. This can happen when someone applies for a loan, credit, lease, or government aid, or for another allowed purpose under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
Automated verification through The Work Number is available around the clock. It can help improve opportunities for employees and contractors and reduce the risk of errors that can happen with manual responses.
It saves you the time you’d spend pulling employee or contractor information and sending it to lenders, creditors, or government agencies. For your team members, faster verifications can mean faster access to what they need and a lower chance of you getting stuck in the middle of their application.
The Work Number follows the law and shares data only with approved lenders or agencies. It uses the highest privacy standards.
How The Work Number protects data privacy
Credentialed verifiers must get consent from your employees or contractors before they can request, access, or use employment and income information from The Work Number. Only approved verifiers with a valid, legal reason under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) can access the data. The FCRA governs The Work Number and uses the latest security tools to protect data for more than three million employers of all sizes and industries.
Who can request employment and income information
Only approved verifiers like lenders, creditors, or government agencies can request employment and income information from The Work Number.
The information they get is usually proof of employment or income, like salary or wage details, depending on the request.
Not every lender uses The Work Number. If the lender does not use it, or if your company has opted out, your employees or contractors may ask you for help directly. This may include:
Giving your employee or contractor a written letter that confirms their employment or income
Telling your employee or contractor to share recent paystubs or tax forms with their lender
Following other steps the lender asks for
