Medicare and your Gusto benefits

Many people know Medicare as a program for people 65 and older. It also extends to younger individuals with certain disabilities and diseases.

If your company manages Gusto-brokered health insurance, Gusto sends Medicare Part D notices to employees in October.

Gusto does not provide services related to Medicare. Employees are responsible for understanding their own coverage. Refer to Medicare.gov to learn about the types of Medicare coverage, enrolling and more.

FAQs: Employer-sponsored coverage and Medicare

If your company offers health insurance through Gusto, below are a few frequently asked questions about how employer-sponsored coverage and Medicare relate.

Q: Can employees enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B waive their employer-sponsored medical coverage while keeping their dependents enrolled?

A: For customers with Gusto-managed benefits, an employee must be enrolled in order for their dependents to be enrolled under their plan.

Q: Can I drop my group health insurance when I am eligible for Medicare?

A: Yes, gaining other coverage (such as Medicare) is typically considered a qualifying life event (QLE). A QLE is an event that your insurance carrier considers to be a valid reason to change your benefits outside open enrollment. Click here to learn more about QLEs and how to change your benefits with Gusto.

Q: What are Gusto’s responsibilities in disclosing Medicare requirements and coordinating benefits?

A: Gusto does not provide services related to Medicare, notices to individuals nearing 65, assistance with determining primary and secondary payers for healthcare, or notices regarding coordination of benefits with Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare has a tool to help you determine which pays first
