We do not currently support piece-rate pay in Gusto.
Piece-rate pay means workers earn money based on how much work they complete, not by the hour or by salary. Employees get paid for each unit of work they finish.
Common examples of piece-rate work
Some common examples include:
Nurses paid per medical procedure
Carpet installers paid per yard installed
Cable technicians paid per unit installed
Factory workers paid per item completed
Piece-rate pay creates payroll challenges. Employers must:
Make sure employees still earn minimum wage, even if production is low
Calculate overtime pay using complex formulas when employees work over 40 hours
Track all work time, including breaks and training
Follow state laws, which may limit or restrict piece-rate pay
Because of these challenges, we do not support piece-rate pay.
We support these payment options:
Hourly wages
Salary pay
Commission pay
Bonus payments
If you have questions about employee pay or need help choosing the right pay type, we can help.
