A 401(k) is designed to provide income once you retire, but there may be times when you need to access that money sooner. You can generally access funds from your account in a few ways.

To see a comparison of the ways you can take money out of your 401(k) and check which options you're eligible for, use your Gusto Retirement dashboard. Choose the path that matches how you signed in, then follow the steps.
Sign in to Gusto and go to Benefits > Active Benefits > 401(k) > Manage.
Go to the Move money tab and select Take money out.
Under See my options, select Withdraw or borrow.
Enter the purpose or reason for your withdrawal, like general expenses or medical emergencies.
Enter the amount you want to withdraw, then select Calculate.
Sign in directly at the Gusto Retirement sign-in page.
Select Money movement in the main navigation.
Select Move money out, then select Withdraw or borrow.

Enter the amount you want to withdraw, then select Calculate.
Your available options appear based on your eligibility.
Once your options appear, you can review important details about each one — like the processing timeline, estimated tax withholding, repayment terms, amount you may qualify for, and the overall impact on your retirement. Select the info icon to learn more about any of these topics.¹
If you are not eligible for a specific withdrawal method, that option appears grayed out with an explanation of why.
Once you decide which option to move forward with, click Select. You then see important terms and details about the method you chose. After reading through the information, click the button to move forward — we guide you through the full application process.
Once you submit a withdrawal request, you can track its progress by going to Activity under the Money movement menu.
As you reach different milestones — like when your application is approved or when the funds are sent — you also get email notifications.
