How can we help?

Form 1099-NEC Support

Gusto files 1099-NEC forms to the IRS and required states for all domestic contractors who have been paid through Gusto within the calendar year. Here's how to access your 1099-NEC.

  • At this time we file Forms 1099 regardless of the $600 threshold in order to provide Independent Contractors with the necessary forms to quickly and accurately file their personal tax return.

All earnings are reported in Box 1 of the 1099-NEC as non-employee compensation.

Gusto does not currently support:

  • 1099-NEC filings to locals, where applicable
  • Back-up withholding, if required for your contractor
  • Contractor withholding, if required by the state (i.e. for higher paid contractors or non-resident contractors)
  • International contractor withholding or reporting.

If you're an admin and would like to file the 1099 forms outside of Gusto, sign in to your Gusto account and click the Help tab to contact our team—we'll want to make sure we don't file them on your behalf. You can also let us know when you're completing the end of year checklist, which will appear on the company dashboard.

View a copy of the Form(s) 1099-NEC that we’ve prepared

  1. Go to the Documents section.
  2. In the Company tab, click Form 1099-NEC: [Year] for the applicable year.
  3. The 1099 package will be available for payroll administrators to review in early January, and then made available to contractors later in the month.

If you need a physical copy of your 1099 and you aren't able to download it from your Gusto account, reach out to your company admin for help.

Note: We don't file the cover sheet Form 1096 since this is only a requirement for paper filings. The descriptions of the boxes are simplified and there are other things to consider when filing out each box. Learn more about how to fill out Form 1099-NEC from the instructions provided by the IRS.
