Form 1099-MISC Support

Gusto files 1099-MISC forms to the IRS and required states for all contractors who have been paid through Gusto within the calendar year. Here's how to access your 1099-MISC.

All earnings are reported in Box 7 of the 1099-MISC as non-employee compensation.

Gusto does not currently support:

  • 1099-MISC filings to locals, where applicable
  • Back-up withholding, if required for your contractor
  • Contractor withholding, if required by the state (i.e. for higher paid contractors or non-resident contractors)
  • Other earning types on the 1099-MISC forms besides Box 7 for Non-employee Compensation. For instance, we don't report Rents or Royalties in Boxes 1 and 2, respectively.

If you would like to file the 1099 forms outside of Gusto, email us at with your business name and the impacted contractors. You can also let us know when you're completing the end of year checklist, which will appear on the company dashboard.

To view a copy of the Form(s) 1099-MISC that we’ve prepared for you, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Documents tab.
  2. In the Company tab, click Form 1099-MISC: [Year] for the applicable year.
  3. The 1099 package will be available for payroll administrators to review in early January, and then made available to contractors later in the month.

If you need a physical copy of your 1099 and you aren't able to download it from your Gusto account, reach out to your company admin for help.

Note: We don't file the cover sheet Form 1096 since this is only a requirement for paper filings. The descriptions of the boxes are simplified and there are other things to consider when filing out each box. Learn more about how to fill out Form 1099-MISC from the instructions provided by the IRS.
