How can we help?

Time needed to process a payroll

We have two timelines to process a direct deposit payroll with Gusto. All customers will be put on 4-day payroll when they begin running payroll with Gusto. Some customers may qualify to join our 2-day payroll program. If you are interested in our 2-day payroll program, please reach out to your Gusto advisor for more details.

  • All contractor payments are on a 4-day processing timeline and can't be expedited.

Any payroll run on a weekend or bank holiday will not begin processing until the following business day.

4-day payroll timeline example

On 4-day payroll, you have to run payroll four business days in advance of the check date.

  • Monday: Run payroll by 4pm PT.
  • Tuesday: You will see funds debited from your company's bank account.
  • Wednesday – Thursday: Funds are processing.
  • Friday: Funds are deposited in the employee's bank account, usually in the morning.

2-day payroll timeline example

On 2-day payroll, you have to run payroll two business days in advance of the check date. You must have the funds in your bank account at the time you run payroll even if this is prior to the debit date. If the funds are not available at the time of the payroll run, the payroll will automatically be pushed to a 4-day payroll.

  • Wednesday: Run payroll by 4pm PT.
  • Wednesday: You will see funds debited from your company's bank account. Funds are processing.
  • Friday: Funds are deposited in the employee's bank account, usually in the morning.

If you missed the deadline, run a late payroll and expedite this process or pay your employees by check for one payroll
