This article is for admins who use Relay for online banking and want to connect it to Gusto.
Relay is a no-fee online banking platform that helps small businesses manage operating expenses and track cash flow. Businesses get full banking features with no monthly fees, minimum balance requirements, in-person branch visits, or paperwork.
When you connect Gusto and Relay, you get access to:
Detailed transaction data for payments we initiate
Email and in-app shortfall notifications weeks before a scheduled payroll
Easy account and corporate card setup
Note: Customers who join Gusto from Relay will receive Gusto payroll free for their first 3 months.
Connecting your accounts lets Relay pull transaction data for payments we initiate, and it sends you shortfall notifications before payroll runs.
To connect to Gusto from Relay:
Go to Settings.
Click the Integrations tab.
Scroll to the Payroll section. Next to Gusto, click Connect.
Click Login to Gusto.
If you’re new to Gusto: Click Create a Gusto account, enter some basic info, then complete your onboarding in Gusto. Then return to Step 1 to finish setting up the Relay integration.
Click Continue to Gusto.
Enter your Gusto admin credentials and click Sign in.
Select the business(es) you’ll be connecting to Relay and click Authorize.
If you have multiple companies to connect: Select all the accounts you’ll be connecting to Relay. Complete the setup steps for the first account, then sign in to each of your Relay accounts and repeat these steps to connect each one to Gusto.
We redirect you to Relay. Choose the Gusto company you’re connecting to your Relay account.
Click Save.
Once you click Save, your Gusto and Relay accounts are connected. To sync transaction data with Gusto, make sure you designate Relay as your payroll bank. Employee and transaction data sync daily. To update the data sooner, you can run a manual sync at any time. Go to the Sync Gusto employee and payroll data with Relay section of the article.
If an employee already has both a Gusto and a Relay account, you can link them. Linking an employee’s accounts lets Relay update their personal info (like job title and address) anytime you make changes in Gusto.
To link an employee’s accounts:
Go to the Team section.
Click the name of the person you want to link.
If Relay detected a Gusto account for the user, their profile will say “Team Member Matches a Gusto Record.”
Click Link Gusto Record.
Once connected, any changes you make to the employee’s personal info in Gusto sync to Relay within a day. To sync their info sooner, go to the Sync Gusto employee and payroll data with Relay section of the article.
Gusto and Relay sync employee and transaction data every day. You can also run a manual sync or add new hires to Relay at any time.
Automatically sync payroll transaction data
When you set Relay as your company bank account in Gusto, transaction data syncs automatically from Gusto to Relay every day.
Manually sync information from Gusto to Relay
Employee and transaction data sync daily. To update Relay’s records sooner, you can run a manual sync at any time.
To run a manual sync:
Go to Settings.
Choose the Integrations tab.
Scroll to Gusto and click Sync now.
Set up Relay accounts for new hires
When you hire a new employee in Gusto, you can send their info to Relay to streamline their banking and corporate card setup. You can assign each user to one of seven permission sets, and Relay will invite them to set up their account.
To sync a new hire’s info from Gusto to Relay:
Go to the Team section.
Click Add Team Member.
Under Import from a third-party service, choose Gusto.
Click the name of the team member you want to import. You can also search by their email address.
Select the permission level you want the team member to have.
If you give them manager or bill payer access, select the checking accounts you authorize them to access.
Click Invite.
The employee will get an email inviting them to set up their Relay account. Their access to checking accounts, cards, and other features depends on the settings you chose in step 6. If needed, you can resend an invitation from the Team section of your Relay admin account.
Once you set up the integration and run payroll with Relay as your company bank account in Gusto, you can find detailed transaction data in Relay.
To find transaction data in Relay:
Go to Accounts.
Choose the account you want to review activity for.
For each transaction, Relay lists the payroll cycle and transaction code. You can refer to our list of transaction types and their codes. A few examples:
NET = Debit Net Pay
TAX = Debit Tax
CND = Debit Contractor Pay
Payments to contractors also include each contractor’s name and their payment method (direct deposit, check, historical payment, or correction payment).
If there’s a risk that low funds may prevent Gusto from starting a scheduled payroll, admins get shortfall alerts 14 and 7 days before the scheduled payroll. Relay determines shortfall risk based on previous payroll transactions, account balance, and scheduled outgoing payments. Payroll will not go through if there are insufficient funds in the connected checking account.
Shortfall alerts will prompt you to:
Cancel an upcoming scheduled payment.
Pull money into Relay from an external account.
Transfer funds from another Relay checking account.
To view the projected transactions that are putting the payroll at risk:
In Relay, go to Accounts.
Find the shortfall alert, then click Review Projected Transactions.
