Admins with the required permissions can view and complete offboarding checklists after an employee has been dismissed.
The offboarding checklist is available on all plan types, however the ability to create custom offboarding tasks is only available on the Plus or Premium plan—upgrade your plan at any time.
The offboarding checklist will not be generated for historical employees.
Add or customize your offboarding checklist template Adding custom tasks is only available to Plus and Premium customers—upgrade your plan at any time.
We recommend customizing your offboarding checklist before you dismiss people, so it’s ready to go. At this time, you can only have one offboarding checklist template for all team members.

- Choose when the task should be completed by, and click Add task under the timeframe:
- Before the last day
- On the last day
- After the last day

- If this task is for future dismissals, we recommend keeping it general, like "Conduct exit interview."
- Add a task description (optional).
- Select a team member to assign the task to (optional).
- The assigned teammate will be able to see this dismissal task. They’ll also be able to see it when future dismissals are created if it's added to your dismissal template.

Run a final payroll from the offboarding checklist - Sign in to Gusto.
- Click the People section and select Team members.
- Select the Offboarding tab.
- Click View checklist next to the employee.
- To review dismissal payment requirements for this employee (or to let us know if you’ve already paid them), click the three-dot action menu and select Update final payroll method.
- We’ll recommend the most compliant option, but you can choose to pay them however you’d like:
-
Dismissal payroll
- Select this option if you need to pay the employee's final wages before the company’s next regular payday. There will be a separate record of the final payment, and they'll be removed from their last regular payroll cycle.
- Click Start to run the dismissal payroll.
-
Regular
- This option is the same as a dismissal payroll, except there will not be a separate record of final payment, and you cannot customize the employee's final payday (they’ll be paid on the regular payday).
- This will mark the task as complete because the employee will appear on the regular payroll.
-
I already paid them
- This will mark the task as complete.
