This article is about the employee features available on the Gusto mobile app. Sign in to your Gusto online account for full access to all employee features.
The Gusto mobile app helps employees manage aspects of your Gusto profiles, view Pay Insights, view and edit tax elections, and access financial tools right from your mobile device.
The mobile app works on iPhone (iOS®) and Android™ phones. Download it from the App Store® or Google Play® store1 and sign in to get started.
Employers can run payroll in the mobile app. The Gusto mobile app does not currently offer any functionality for contractors.
Cash Accounts2
Spending account and debit card
In the mobile app, you can access an interest-bearing checking account that helps connect your payday to your banking.3 They also get budgeting tools and dynamic spending insights so they can track their spending habits over time. With the mobile app, employees don’t have to wait for their debit card in the mail to use it—they can add their virtual card to their mobile wallet immediately after opening their account via Apple Pay® or Google Pay™.6 Immediate card access with the virtual card is only available for the first card. A reordered card can only be added to the mobile wallet once the physical card is received and activated.
You can access interest-bearing bank accounts to help them bridge payday and savings, making it easier to save for the unexpected and achieve greater financial security.5
Gusto has partnered with april to offer helpful tax-related tools exclusively in the Gusto mobile app:
Paycheck Optimizer: This tool offers eligible employees suggestions on adjusting their federal withholding based on their projected tax outcome. If the suggestion is accepted, the employee will be immediately prompted to re-sign their W-4 federal tax election form. If signed, the new tax elections should be reflected on their next processed paycheck.
Automated Tax Filing: A tax filing tool for yearly personal taxes that can be accomplished while staying within the Gusto mobile app.
Employees enrolled in Gusto time tracking can clock in, clock out, and manage their hours at the touch of a button.
If you're a domestic contractor, you can also track your hours, however, you won’t be able to use the Gusto mobile app to track your time.
Check out time tracking instructions for employees and our overview for employers.
You can only track hours or turn on location sharing for an active pay period.
Open the Gusto mobile app.
Go to the Time tab.
Tap Clock in.
If you prefer to manually add hours for the day, tap the Current pay period card. Select Add hours. Select your clock-in and clock-out time periods for the day.
You can add a note to each block of time. If required by your employer, you may be prompted to leave a note to identify a break or when you've manually added hours.
Tap Clock out when your shift is done.
You’ll get notifications in the app reminding you to check or correct clock-out times.
Track a break
To take a break when you’re clocked in, select Take a break and select the type of break—meal or rest.
You'll only see this if your admin has meal and rest breaks set up and you’re assigned to a break policy.
When your break is done, remember to come back to the app and select either End break and clock in or End break and clock out.
If you end your break early, you may be asked to select why you’re ending it early. See your break-specific state laws.
Gusto will automatically calculate your time worked for the day and log it in your timesheet for your manager or admin to review and approve.
Here's how to track your time to a project when you clock in and out. Click here to learn more about tracking hours to a project.
Open the Gusto mobile app.
Go to the Time tab.
Use the dropdown in the tile to select the project you'd like to track time to.
If the time is not associated with a specific project, choose no project.
The list of projects was created by your company—if you’re not sure which to choose, reach out to your payroll administrator.
If applicable, enter the task associated with the project from the dropdown.
Select Clock in.
Once your workday or shift is complete, select Clock out.
You can edit your hours until they’ve been approved or a payroll admin processes payroll for that pay period. At that point, admins will need to make any required adjustments.
To manually adjust your time worked in the Gusto mobile app:
Go to the Time tab.
Tap the Current pay period card.
Make sure the pay period selected is the one for review.
Select Add hours to add hours manually. To change or delete hours/breaks, tap Edit.
If your employer requires it, you may be prompted to leave a note about your change.
We'll automatically update your tracked hours.
Can a shift span for longer than a day?
No. Gusto automatically stops a shift at 12am and starts a new shift at 12am that ends once you clock out. If you forget to clock out, you can edit your hours in the Gusto mobile app or in Time Tracking in your online Gusto account.
Can I enter future hours?
No.
Your employer may use our Scheduling tool to post your work shifts in your Gusto account. However, they must turn the feature on first. If you do not see this option, reach out to your employer.
You can view your assigned shifts on the website and in the Gusto mobile app.
To view your work schedule in the app:
Open the Gusto mobile app.
Go to Time.
Select the My schedule card.
In the schedule view, tap on the shift you want more details about.
If your employer has left any notes about a shift, you can see them here.
The payday tracker displays all upcoming payments until payday passes. After payday, you can view past payments from the Pay section of your account.
Your pay date depends on:
When your employer runs payroll
Your company’s direct deposit speed
We show this information in your payday tracker, including:
When your employer submits payroll
Your estimated payday
Payday tracker milestones may change if your employer submits payroll earlier or later than expected.
Note: We do not send emails or notifications for payday updates. To see your tracker, open the Gusto mobile app.
Here are some important reminders:
Direct deposit timing: Your money can arrive in your bank account any time during the business day, up to 5 pm local time. The exact timing depends on how quickly your bank processes the deposit.
Payment method: Even if you set up direct deposit, your employer may choose to pay you by check instead.
Bank account details on your paystub: We show the last four digits of the bank account paid at the top of your paystub.
Pay Scheduled – This shows your next expected payday.
Payroll Processing – Your employer submitted payroll, and we’re waiting for the bank to process it.
Delayed – Payroll was submitted late, and your payday may change. Contact your employer for details. We cannot give you additional information.
Payment Processing – Good news! The bank is processing your payment.
Happy Payday – Your paycheck will appear once your bank posts the deposit (they have until 5 pm local time).
If there’s a problem with your bank account, you’ll see a Bank Account Issue in your mobile app To-Dos.
When this happens, we hide your payday tracker and take you through the steps to fix the issue. Follow the in-app instructions as soon as possible. The faster you resolve the issue, the sooner we can retry sending your payment.
You may need to:
Add a new bank account, or
Reconnect an existing one
Important: You may need to update your bank account from a computer, not the mobile app.

Go to the Time tab.
If the Time tab does not appear on your mobile app homepage, ask your payroll admin if this is a feature the company offers through Gusto.
Tap Time off.
Select Request Time Off.
Choose what kind of leave this is.
Select the day(s) for your requested time off.
Full Days: this submits 8 hours for each business day (does not include weekends).
Partial Days: a default amount of 8 hours is entered for each date. Update this number as needed.
If you select a single date: a default amount of 8 hours will be entered. Update this number as needed.
If you select multiple days, choose either.
Optional: Add a note to your employer about the request.
Tap Finish.
Your company's payroll admins will be notified by email of your request. Once the request has been approved or declined, you'll receive an email notification.

Open the Gusto mobile app.
Go to the Time tab.
Tap Time off.
In the list of upcoming requests, select the time off request you’d like to cancel.

To change a time off request, cancel the current one using the steps above and then create a new one.
If your company uses the Expense feature in Gusto, follow the steps below to submit expenses for reimbursement on the mobile app. If you do not see the Expenses tab in your app, your employer may not have this feature set up.
Add an expense to be reimbursed
To add an expense for reimbursement:
Open the Gusto mobile app.
At the bottom of the screen, tap More.
Select Expenses.
If you do not see this, your employer may not have this feature set up—contact your employer for guidance.
Select Add expense.
In the date field, enter the purchase/transaction date for the expense.
The date reflected for the expense in the Expenses Page will be the date of transaction, not the date of submission.
The date of submission can still be viewed by tapping View under the Expense column.
Select a category and add a description for the expense.
Complete the details for the total amount to be reimbursed.
If you select the Car and Mileage category, and your employer has set up mileage reimbursement rates, enter the mileage driven and select the appropriate reimbursement rate from the dropdown.
The total dollar amount is automatically calculated.
Take or add a photo of the receipt or purchase confirmation being reimbursed in PDF, JPG, or PNG format.
Tap Save.
Once you submit your expense, your employer is notified. Once approved and applied to payroll, you’ll see the amount as a separate line item on the paystub titled “one-time reimbursement.”
To add another expense, just follow this process again—you can add as many items as you need. Expenses that are awaiting review, approved, rejected, and paid expenses will show up in the associated tab on your Expenses page.
Edit an expense
To edit an expense:
Open the Gusto mobile app.
At the bottom of the screen, tap More.
Select Expenses.
Tap the three dots next to the expense that needs to be changed.
Select Edit.
Make your updates.
Tap Save.
Delete an expense
To delete an expense:
Open the Gusto mobile app.
At the bottom of the screen, tap More.
Select Expenses.
Next to the expense you're deleting, tap the three dots icon.
Select Delete.
Tap Delete expense to confirm you want to remove this expense.
You can use the paycheck splitter to divide your direct deposit and automatically route your paycheck into multiple accounts—whether a savings goal, a spending account, or external bank account(s).
For example, you might allocate $25 from each paycheck to your Gusto savings goal for a “Rainy Day Fund,” $50 to your external bank account, and the remainder of your paycheck to your Gusto spending account.
From the paycheck splitter, you can add and remove bank accounts, change dollar or percent allocation to each, and drag and drop accounts to order them however you’d like. Once saved, paycheck splitter changes take effect on your next paycheck, as long as your employer has not already processed that payroll.
Note: When you save a paycheck splitter change, Gusto may ask you to approve the change in the Gusto mobile app using Face ID, Touch ID, or your Android device biometrics. SMS verification is available as a backup. Learn more in Approving secure changes with biometric authentication.
Open the Gusto mobile app.
Go to the Pay tab.
Select Edit paycheck split.
Enter how you'd like to split your pay.
Tap Save.
You can access Pay Insights within the Pay tab, which shows the patterns and details of your past paychecks and insights for future paychecks. This feature is only available on the mobile app.
Pay Insights includes:
The ability to view and download individual paystubs with a simple breakdown of hours, taxes, deductions, and more
Charts showing month-over-month income patterns
A year-to-date earnings and paycheck breakdown visualization
An upcoming pay date projector
You can change how much tax is taken from your paychecks by updating your tax elections. These changes will show up on your next paycheck after your employer runs payroll.
To update your tax elections:
Sign in to your account on the mobile app.¹
In the top-right corner, select the You icon.
Select Tax elections.
Tap Edit for the sections that need to be updated.
Tap Save.
If federal taxes were updated—tap Sign Document and sign your new W-4 form.
You can also review and sign this form later in your Documents section.
On or after the check date, view your paystub and review your withholding under Employee Taxes Withheld.
The app lets you easily view your personal tax and employee documents, including W-2 tax documents and W-4 tax forms.
To view your tax documents:
Open the Gusto mobile app.
In the bottom-right, select More.
Select Documents.
Choose either Tax Documents or Employee Documents.
