Human Interest provides affordable, full-service 401(k) plans for small and medium businesses with zero transaction fees.
The Gusto and Human Interest integration syncs your payroll and employee contributions and simplifies 401(k) administration. There's no additional cost to integrate your Gusto and Human Interest accounts.
If your company already offers a 401(k) through another provider, you have two options:
You must have Full Access admin permissions in Gusto to set up the integration.
The new 401(k) benefit will appear in the Benefits section of your Gusto admin account after the plan's start date. Once the plan starts, you can view enrollment and contribution data in Gusto. You may see limited information before your plan’s start date.
Important: Employee elections will sync to Gusto a few days before your plan's first check date. Contact Human Interest if you have questions about this timeline.
Once you've set up a 401(k) for your company with Human Interest (or transferred your company's previous 401(k) to Human Interest), follow these steps to integrate the benefit with your Gusto payroll.
To manage your 401(k), change contributions, or review plan settings, always do so in Human Interest. Any changes you make there will sync to your Gusto payroll. Once you run payroll, you can find a record of all contributions processed by pay date and employee on the Contributions tab of your Human Interest dashboard.
After you set up an integration between Gusto and your 401(k) provider, you can view your plan details in Gusto after the plan's start date. If you have questions about your plan or need to make changes, contact your provider directly.
To view Human Interest deductions and contributions, run a payroll journal in your admin account.
Running payroll after the plan's start date
After the plan's start date, running payroll in Gusto will automatically deduct employee contributions and record company contributions. The day after the check date, Human Interest debits the company for both the employee deductions and company contributions. Human Interest invests the funds in employees’ 401(k)s the following day. If you have questions about debits or plan funds, contact Human Interest.
Troubleshoot missing payroll deductions
There are a few reasons why there may not be payroll deductions:
New hires
Whenever you hire someone in Gusto, their info automatically syncs to Human Interest. Once they fulfill any eligibility requirements (such as a new hire waiting period), Human Interest invites them to enroll and their deductions will be automatically added to payroll.
If contributions have not started for a new hire: They may not be eligible to enroll yet, or they may have enrolled after payroll was processed
Dismissals
The dismissal date automatically syncs to Human Interest. After their last day of eligibility, Human Interest will send the employee their options to roll over their 401k to another provider or maintain it with Human Interest.
Regular 401(k) contributions will be made on a dismissal payroll.
Note: Severance payments are not eligible for 401(k) deductions. You must use the Gusto-provided severance earnings type to automatically block deductions and contributions for severance payments.
Change contributions or policy settings
Reach out to Human Interest to change any of your company's policy settings.
Important: Changing the company match for a specific payroll is not permitted per 401(k) plan policies. The company match cannot be blocked on any payroll, including off-cycle payrolls.
Loans
If your plan allows participants to request loans, employees can reach out to Human Interest to apply. Once the employee reaches the repayment stage of the loan, Human Interest will notify them with instructions. If Human Interest collects the repayment through payroll deductions, the employee can expect to see post-tax loan deductions on their paystubs. Refer to the terms of your loan or contact Human Interest to confirm your repayment method.
Payroll data not syncing
In order for payroll data to sync, Gusto must be set as your payroll provider in Human Interest. If you’ve changed your payroll provider since starting your 401(k), contact Human Interest to update it.
Q: Does Human Interest support CalSavers, OregonSaves, etc.?
A: Yes, Human Interest has plans that support state requirements. Contact Human Interest to learn more
Q: Can I change an employee’s deductions on a past payroll?
A: No—only a participant can change their contribution rate, and any change will only be effective on future payrolls. Click here for steps for an employee to change their contribution rate.

Q: If I enter Human Interest 401(k) benefits on a non-Gusto payroll, will Human Interest debit my account?
A: In most cases, yes. If you are entering a non-Gusto payroll with Human Interest contributions that do not need to be debited, contact Human Interest before processing the non-Gusto payroll.
