This article is for admins who want to integrate their Human Interest 401(k) plan with Gusto payroll.
Human Interest provides affordable, full-service 401(k) plans for small and medium businesses. They charge zero transaction fees.
The Gusto and Human Interest integration syncs your payroll and employee contributions. This makes 401(k) management easier. You do not pay extra to integrate your accounts.
If your company already offers a 401(k) through another provider, you have two options:
Set up manual payroll deductions to collect employee contributions.
Transfer your existing plan to Human Interest using the steps in this article.
You must have Full Access admin permissions in Gusto to set up the integration.
To connect a Human Interest 401(k) plan to Gusto:
In the bottom-left corner, click App directory.
In the search bar, search for Human Interest.
Click Learn more.
To integrate your existing 401(k) with Gusto, click Connect. We redirect you to Human Interest’s website. You’ll finish connecting your accounts there.
After the plan starts, we show the new 401(k) benefit in the Benefits section of your Gusto admin account. You can then view enrollment and contribution data in Gusto. You may see limited information before your plan starts.
Important: Employee elections sync to Gusto a few days before your plan’s first check date. Contact Human Interest if you have questions about this timeline.
Once you set up a 401(k) for your company with Human Interest, you can integrate the benefit with your Gusto payroll. You can also do this if you transferred your company’s previous 401(k) to Human Interest.
To connect to Gusto from Human Interest:
On the right, under Integrations, click Connect to Gusto.
Enter your Gusto admin credentials and click Sign in.
Select the accounts you want to connect to Human Interest and click Authorize.
We’ll then redirect you to Human Interest. If the connection worked, a check mark appears next to Gusto in the Integrations tile.
To manage your 401(k), change contributions, or review plan settings, always do so in Human Interest. Any changes you make there sync to your Gusto payroll. Once you run payroll, you can find a record of all contributions on the Contributions tab of your Human Interest dashboard. They’re organized by pay date and employee.
After you set up an integration between Gusto and your 401(k) provider, you can view your plan details in Gusto once the plan starts. If you have questions about your plan or need to make changes, contact your provider directly.
To view enrollment and contributions:
Go to Benefits.
Under Active Benefits, click Human Interest 401(k).
Use the tabs at the top of the page to navigate 401(k) plan information.
Overview: Plan information and current account balance
Employees: Enrollment details
Contribution History: Year-to-date and per payroll history
To view Human Interest deductions and contributions, run a payroll journal in your admin account.
Once you integrate Human Interest with Gusto, your 401(k) runs automatically with each payroll.
Run payroll with 401(k) deductions
After the plan starts, we automatically deduct employee contributions when you run payroll. We also record company contributions. The day after the check date, Human Interest debits the company for both the employee deductions and company contributions. Human Interest invests the funds in employees’ 401(k)s the following day. If you have questions about debits or plan funds, contact Human Interest.
Troubleshoot missing payroll deductions
Payroll deductions may be missing for several reasons:
Your plan has not started yet. Check your Human Interest account to confirm the start date.
The employee may not be eligible yet, per your plan’s eligibility settings.
The employee has not enrolled.
Your company ran payroll before we processed the enrollment or deduction change.
We apply taxes before deductions. The employee had $0 in net pay after taxes.
We do not deduct 401(k) contributions from reimbursements.
The employee reached the IRS annual contribution limit. Once they do, the 401(k) no longer appears in the employee’s Gusto account. Check your Human Interest account or the year-to-date tax summary to confirm.
Add new hires
When you hire someone in Gusto, their info automatically syncs to Human Interest. Once they meet any eligibility requirements (like a new hire waiting period), Human Interest invites them to enroll. We then automatically add their deductions to payroll.
If contributions have not started for a new hire, they may not be eligible to enroll yet. They may have also enrolled after you ran payroll.
Handle dismissals
The dismissal date automatically syncs to Human Interest. After their last day of eligibility, Human Interest sends the employee information about their options. They can roll over their 401(k) to another provider or keep it with Human Interest.
We make regular 401(k) contributions on a dismissal payroll.
Note: We do not deduct 401(k) contributions from severance payments. You must use the Gusto-provided severance earnings type. This automatically blocks deductions and contributions for severance payments.
Change contributions or policy settings
Contact Human Interest to change any of your company’s policy settings.
Important: 401(k) plan policies do not allow changing the company match for a specific payroll. You cannot block the company match on any payroll. This includes off-cycle payrolls.
Handle loans
If your plan allows loans, employees can contact Human Interest to apply. Once the employee reaches the repayment stage, Human Interest notifies them with instructions. If Human Interest collects the repayment through payroll deductions, the employee will see post-tax loan deductions on their paystubs. Check the terms of your loan or contact Human Interest to confirm your repayment method.
Fix payroll data not syncing to Gusto
For payroll data to sync, you need to set Gusto as your payroll provider in Human Interest. If you changed your payroll provider since starting your 401(k), contact Human Interest to update it.
Q: Does Human Interest support CalSavers, OregonSaves, and other state retirement programs?
A: Yes. Human Interest offers plans that meet state requirements. Contact Human Interest to learn more.

Q: If I enter Human Interest 401(k) benefits on a non-Gusto payroll, will Human Interest debit my account?
