Set up, manage, and troubleshoot 2-step verification

This article is for all users, including employers, admins, employees, and contractors, who need to set up, manage, or troubleshoot 2-step verification.

About 2-step verification

2-step verification adds an extra layer of security to your account. Even if someone knows your password, they cannot sign in without a special code. We send this code to your phone or app.

Gusto stores a lot of your personal info, so we require most users to set up 2-step verification. You need to use it every time you sign in.

Sign in with a passkey — no code needed

A passkey confirms it is you on its own, with Face ID, Touch ID, or a security key. So Gusto will not send a 2-step verification code. You still use 2-step verification when you sign in with a password, and when you first set up a passkey.

What you need to sign in to Gusto

You can sign in two ways:

  1. Sign in with a passkey. Enter your email, then confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or a security key. You do not need a password or a code.

  2. Sign in with a password. You need three things, in this order:

If you work for multiple companies in Gusto

Your Gusto account is tied to your email address — not to each company you work for. If you work for more than one employer in Gusto, you use one login and one set of 2-step verification to access all of them.

If you can sign in to Gusto

If you can sign in to Gusto, you can turn on 2-step verification using a phone or a desktop computer. You can then set up a passkey to verify your identity, or to sign in faster without a password.

Troubleshoot sign-in problems
