Find how much you pay for your current plan on your Gusto invoice.
The contractor-only plan is no longer available as of October 1, 2026. You cannot sign up for it or switch to it from another plan, and you can pay contractors on any Gusto plan. If your company is already on the contractor-only plan, nothing changes. See what that plan includes.
You can change your plan once per month.
Gusto bills one month behind (in arrears), so an invoice covers the plan you had during the month before. Whether a plan change shows up right away depends on the type of change:
Upgrades take effect immediately, and we apply your new pricing and features to the current month.
Downgrades take effect at the start of the next billing period (the first of the month), so the month you changed in still bills at your previous plan.
Removed add-ons work the same way as downgrades. Any add-on that was active during a month still appears on the next invoice for that month.
To change your plan in Gusto:
In the left menu, click your company name.
Under Settings, click Plan & billing.
In the Gusto billing section, click Change plan.
Review and compare your plan options. You can also click Schedule a call with a platform advisor at the top of the page to discuss the options.
Under the price of the plan you want, click Choose plan.
When you upgrade, your plan starts immediately. When you downgrade, your plan starts at the beginning of the next billing period (the first of the month).
If you have the “Priority support and HR services” add-on: When you downgrade or cancel your account, you lose access to the HR Resource Center.
To keep copies of your tickets and documents in the HR portal, save them before your downgrade or cancellation takes effect.
If you choose the Premium plan, we will not upgrade or bill you for Premium until you’ve discussed the plan and pricing with a member of our team. Click Contact us under the plan’s pricing, then Schedule a call.
On the next page, choose any add-ons.
Review the plan details, let us know your reason for switching plans, and click Confirm.
Q: If I remove an add-on on the first of the month, do I still pay for the full month?
A: Yes. We can remove the add-on the same day you request it, but your company will still pay for that full month. Our invoices are billed one month late, so any add-on active during a month appears on the next month’s invoice. For example, if an add-on was active on April 1 and you removed it, your May 1 invoice (which covers April) will still include that charge.
Q: How do I add or remove Gusto Business Compliance?
A: It's managed separately from your plan, in Taxes & Compliance under Business compliance. If you remove it, we stop being your registered agent in your covered states, so you'll need to appoint a new one. Learn more in Manage your subscription, cancel, or order a one-time service.
