Contractors typically act as external consultants or project owners. Make sure the job title reflects the contractor’s scope of work. Learn more on our blog.
To add or edit a job title for a contractor:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Next to Job title, click Edit.
Select a job title from the dropdown, or click Create job title to add a new one.
Click Save.
You can organize contractors by department to track work and manage reporting.
To assign a contractor to a department:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Next to Department, click Edit.
Select a department from the dropdown, or click Create department to start a new one.
Click Save.
We send some company-related info from Gusto to the work email. This helps keep your company info more secure and private. We also use this email to set up software accounts for this contractor. If you do not add a work email, we’ll use the contractor’s personal email.
To update the work email for a contractor:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Next to Work email, click Edit.
If you have not added one already, click Add work email to get started.
Click Save.
Managers can approve hours and time off. Based on your settings, they may also be able to access or edit information about their reports. Learn more.
To assign a manager for a contractor:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Next to Manager, click Edit.
Find a manager from the list and click Save.
You can change when a contractor’s work with your company began.
To edit the start date for a contractor:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Scroll to the Work header and click Edit.
Change the start date, then click Save.
To change a contractor’s pay in your web browser:
Go to People.
Click the contractor’s name to view their profile.
Under Information, click Pay.
Next to Compensation, click Edit.
Choose an hourly rate or a fixed rate. If you choose hourly, you'll need to enter the hourly wage amount.
Click Save.
In the Gusto mobile app:
Open the Gusto mobile app and sign in.
Go to People.
Select the contractor's name.
Tap the menu near the top-left of the screen.
Select Pay.
Next to Compensation, tap Edit.
Choose an hourly rate or a fixed rate. If you choose hourly, you'll need to enter the hourly wage amount.
Tap Save.
A contractor's work history shows the start and end dates for their work and jobs.
To view work history for a contractor:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Scroll to the Work header and click View work history.
In the top-right corner, click the X to close the page.
You can update the state where the contractor works.
To change the work state for a contractor:
Go to People.
Click the name of the contractor.
Scroll to the Work address header and click Edit.
Select a state from the dropdown and click Save.
