Important reminders
If you're experiencing issues with your employee bank account, or want to change your payment method, head to this article. Or if you need to update your bank account information, like setting up multiple bank accounts, head to this article.
Your paystubs become available in Gusto on the check date of the payment your employer submitted. If you're not seeing your payment, or your company used another payroll provider, ask your admin for the previous paystubs.
Each paystub includes:
The taxes on your paystub may vary if your gross pay changes paycheck to paycheck. Your net pay is the remaining amount of gross pay after taxes, benefits, and any deductions are made.
If you have pre-tax benefits, your taxable wages are typically lower, resulting in more take-home pay than if the benefit was post-tax. Under federal law, many pre-tax benefits are not subject to Federal Income Tax (FIT) or FICA (Social Security and Medicare tax) taxes. However, there are exceptions. For example, 401(k) contributions are subject to FICA taxes, but not to FIT.
Payroll defines wages in several ways.
Gross wages | The total amount of pay before taxes and deductions. Gross wages can include not only the hourly or salary wages but also tips, bonuses, commissions, vacation pay, sick pay, and holiday pay. |
Taxable wages | The part of gross wages that must be taxed for income taxes. This means gross wages minus any pre-tax deductions, and any amounts that are over the wage base limits for the particular tax. Pre-tax deductions are not pre-tax for all taxes. For example, a deduction may be pre-tax for federal tax but not for state tax. |
Subject wages | These wages are similar to taxable wages. The difference is that subject wages must be reported on specific tax returns as wages. This is based on federal and state guidelines. But, taxes are not withheld from subject wages. |
Excess wages | Wages that are subject to be taxed, but are over the wage base |
Exempt wages | These are wages that are considered not taxable. Wages could be exempt because they exceed the wage base limit for a particular tax. Or, it could be a payment such as a reimbursement which is not considered taxable. |
The Upcoming Paychecks feature is a real-time payroll status tool available to you in your Gusto account and the Gusto Wallet mobile app.
This tool displays all upcoming payments, and each payment will remain here until the payday passes. After this, you can view all prior payments from the Paystubs section of your account.
If there are issues with your payment after payday, we'll email you.
We'll use your preferred payment method, which you can edit up until processing begins for each paycheck.
Keep in mind, even if you have direct deposit set up, it's at your employer's discretion on how they pay you—via direct deposit or by check payment. This section will update to the final method and destination determined during payroll.
This section will show additional information about the status of the payment (if you need to update your bank information, if you need to reach out to your employer, etc.).
It'll also show whether the payment method for the payroll is set to check or direct deposit. If the payment method is direct deposit, it'll show the bank account(s) the funds will be deposited to.
Q: What does status "unknown" mean?
A: This means that we do not have confirmation of the planned payday, and we're unable to provide any more information. We recommend reaching out to your employer for more insight.
Q: Why does my upcoming paycheck say an updated date? Am I not getting paid on time?
A: This means that your employer has processed payroll, but the check date has changed. We're unable to provide more detail, so you'll need to contact your employer for more information.
Q: It says that my payday is today, but my funds have not been deposited yet. What’s going on?
A: The direct deposit timing is based on your bank's processing times—payments may hit your bank account at any time during the business day, until 10pm local time.
Q: It's showing my payment as a check payment. How do I get paid?
A: This means your employer will need to write or print you a check payment—contact them for more information.
Note: This feature is only available to some users.
Paycheck Estimate is a feature provided to employees who are paid through Gusto that allows them to view an estimate of their upcoming pay. It may become available up to 4 business days before the check date and will disappear on the check date of the payroll when the official paystub is available.
This feature is exclusive to the Gusto mobile app. Employees will not be able to access this feature through www.gusto.com.
The amount displayed is an estimate of pay. The estimate may not be accurate and is subject to change based on various factors. If you think the estimate is wrong, wait for the official paystub on the check date.
If the official paystub seems incorrect, contact your employer for more info.
After your employer submits payroll, we’ll electronically send any payments processed as a direct deposit—on payday, you'll get an email from Gusto, and your paystub will be available in your account. After the banks receive our electronic payment, they have until 5 pm local time to make funds available to you in your bank account.
Your employer is responsible for sending or manually distributing the check to you—check your paystub in Gusto to determine how your employer processed the payment (via direct deposit or check).
If you do not see the money in your account on the pay date and believe there’s a delay with your payment, follow the steps below to troubleshoot.
